Florida Assisted Living Costs and Payment Assistance Programs

The state of Florida currently has a base-rate of $121 per day, $3,643 per month and $43,716 per year for assisted living. The least expensive Florida cities are Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville.

The OSS program which is the Optional State Supplementation Program is a subsidized program given by the Florida Department of Children and Families. The program is specifically for seniors with low-income that can’t live independently and must be placed in a senior residential care facility. The recipient must be placed in an adult foster care center, mental health center or assisted living facility to receive the benefit.

Currently, in order to receive the benefit, the person can not be receiving Medicaid assistance for assisted living. The senior must be a Florida resident and over the age of 65. You must be assessed by Health Services or a Case Manager. There are other requirements that must be met prior to acceptance into the program. One of them is a maximum monthly income for singles and for couples. There are also limitations on the assets the single or couple may have at the time of the assisted living application.

There is a supplemental cash benefit that’s awarded to the single or the couple. Single residents can be awarded up to $78.40 and couples $156.00 per month. The amount will fluctuate depending on what type of facility they’re placed in. The above reflects assisted living only. The amount is determined on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that Florida assisted living and adult foster care rates are for assistance with ADLs. Memory and Alzheimer’s care in Florida is separate and typically not included in the baseline assisted living cost.

If you believe you’ll need more substantial coverage, you should look into other assisted living options that may be available throughout Florida state. There are options for senior residential care, foster care and adult day care that you could be quite creative with. If used in the right timing and stage of the elder then it may be cost-effective.

Moreover, looking into long-term-care insurance could be an option even if you’re over 70. And if you’re a United States veteran, there can be ample programs for you in place to help pay for Florida assisted living, if you qualify.

About Florida Assisted Living:

Aging in place in a Florida assisted living facility has a unique advantage for elderly socialization. Senior isolation and loneliness are less likely to occur when the elderly adults are constantly enthusiastically participating in the residential recreational activities of their assisted living facility. The Florida senior citizens are less likely to become depressed when they cherish the memories they create with their fellow residents as they age together at the facility they choose. Florida assisted living facilities host excursions and an array of entertaining residential recreational activities for the elderly to enjoy under the glistening sunshine of the Sunshine State. From bingo and trivia to bowling, the assisted living facilities also always plan ahead and consider alternative options for the elderly to enjoy in the case of thunderstorms and rain. Numerous assisted senior living communities throughout the state of Florida host cultural, spiritual, and social gatherings to encourage the elderly Floridians to physically exercise, socialize with their fellow senior citizens, and continuously learn daily.

The presence of daily fitness programs, yoga and meditation classes, multiple arts and crafts sessions, and numerous educational activities is one of the unique features of assisted living homes in Florida. The elderly adults are able to relax, enjoy the beaches, and socialize as they spend their later years together aging in place at their assisted living complex. The facilities may also have hair and nails salons, barbershops, spas, libraries full of a plethora of books for every genre, and excursions to off-site outings, such as, golf tournaments and picnics in the park.

Picnics and off-site outings scheduled by Florida assisted living communities are made colourful by the presence of a variety of entertainment and socialization destinations. Who said that elderly adults cannot enjoy Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, Six Flags, Busch Gardens, or a plethora of other amusement parks? How about visiting the wildlife of the Everglades, fascinating about Japanese culture at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, learning about Florida’s history at various museums, strolling around the art museums, or taking a swim in a spring or river? The assisted living facilities understand how important it is for the Florida elderly adults to enjoy the adrenalin and excitement of belonging to a community that provides these options, and thus host a variety of excursions. Assisted living facilities may also occasionally escort the elderly to the Florida beaches so they may soak their feet in the blue Atlantic Ocean.

Florida assisted living facilities also recognize that the excursions provide wonderful opportunities for the Florida senior citizens to enjoy a change of scenery, explore their Florida surroundings, and exercise. Aging in place at assisted retirement homes in the Sunshine State is truly a unique and affordable opportunity for the elderly who prefer to retire and relax under the sun. When you tour an assisted living home in Florida for yourself or an elderly loved one, ask the facility about their excursions and residential recreational activities. Are these the types of activities that interest you? Does the assisted living facility have a calendar full of events, and have plans in case the weather does not cooperate? Get to know the other residents and determine whether the aged adult would feel comfortable cherishing moments with the other residents. Consider your assisted living facility as one of Florida’s all-inclusive resorts, and select the facility that would best match the interests and needs of the Florida senior citizen who would be relocated into the facility.
