Assisted living facilities in the state of New York are termed as Adult Homes, Enriched Housing Programs, Adult Care Facilities and Assisted Living Residences. The New York Department of Health licenses all types of senior living facilities, as well as retirement home facilities in New York.
Adult Care Services are for those with cognitive issues as well as functional impairments. Adult Homes are there as standard assisted living and this is the lightest care level in New York State. The Enriched Housing Programs will provide care at the highest level as well. They are all licensed under assisted living facilities and those who run these facilities can choose which level of care they wish to provide.
Each of the assisted living homes in New York are allowed medication management. Each home type may have a certified caregiver dispense and hand over medication, watch medication being taken and dispose of any unused dispensers. They must be medication certified but they are not restricted to or from any of the home types.
Cost of Assisted Living in the State of New York
The statewide average cost for assisted living in the state of New York is $4,185 per month. Dementia care in New York can be more than $1000 higher than that rate. The least expensive for assisted living are Glens Falls and Utica at a range of $2,600 to $2,625 monthly. The most expensive are the various boroughs of New York City, including Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island in a range of $5,270 to $5,916 monthly. There is hope, however, for low income seniors who cannot afford assisted living in New York. There are 2 Medicaid waivers called: MLTC Managed Long Term Care Waiver Program and ALP, the Assisted Living Program Waiver. For either of them you must qualify for Medicaid. There is a $859 per month cap on your income. For ALP, you must qualify to live in a nursing home but choose to live in an assisted living facility. There are health requirements for that as you must be fit enough to not have to receive skilled nursing care in the assisted living center.
It’s a good idea to check out other methods of payment that you may not realize you already have to assist you in paying for senior living in New York. Are you an American military veteran? Are you a retired firefighter or police officer? What about long-term-care insurance? There are also non-profits that are available nationally and in-state that may assist the elderly New Yorkers in paying for assisted living. Finally, look into your existing long-term care insurance policy to see if the benefit is available to you.
When is the best time to tour assisted living facilities in New York?
Different celebrations characterize the holiday season. At such times, families often gather together to eat, drink, and make merry. Many families who are separated by long distances find this season as a unique opportunity to become reunited with their loved ones, particularly their aged parents. During this season, a lot of decision making takes place in most families. Many adult children who have not seen their older parents for a long time may be overwhelmed by their present health condition and may suggest they move to an assisted living home in New York to get better care. This explains why many senior living communities often experience a spike in phone calls and visits during the holidays.
There are several reasons why the holiday season is an excellent time to tour many assisted living communities in New York state. It’s no longer news that New York is one of the busiest places to live in with a beehive of activities in the United States. More so, the decision to encourage your aged parent to seek professional care is not something that can be done alone. You need the consent of your siblings and your parents. Most times, it’s difficult to discuss such issues with all members of the family via a phone call. Hence, a face to face meeting is preferred. But most of your siblings might be drowned in their day to day affairs that there is hardly time for a meeting. Whether you or your aged parent lives in New York, the holiday season gives everyone a little break from the hustle and bustle lifestyle of the city. What a perfect time to discuss issues related to elderly care for your loved one! Here are more reasons to tour a New York assisted living facility during the holidays:
The assisted living facility is lively and fun
Assisted living communities in New York have fun-filled activities in their calendar during the holidays. There are various choir concerts, troops, and gatherings that characterize the season. It’s also a time where many families visit their loved ones who reside in the community. This is a golden opportunity to get accurate reviews from direct sources. You can ask the guests how they feel about the facility and whether their aged loved one is getting the desired care.
The search is easier
One of the reasons to tour a facility during the holidays is that more family members will be present. The search process can be divided among siblings to make it easier and comfortable. You will also be able to interact with other families and residents to understand if your relatives will feel comfortable aging in place at the New York assisted living facility you are considering. You will also be able to understand the compassion that the caregivers have for the residents and the level of care provided during the holiday season. You can then suggest the best assisted living facility in New York for your loved one to consider moving to.
